December 2 Deadline for Arts Education Week Poster Entries

Teachers of students in grades 9 – 12 are invited to enter their students’ artwork in the 2015 Illinois Arts Education Week Poster Contest. The postmark deadline to mail entries and forms to ISBE in Springfield is Monday, December 2, 2014.  The theme for the 2015 poster is: Art is Timeless, and the image should relate in some way to the four arts that are included in the Illinois State Standards (visual arts, dance, theatre and music). Teachers may enter an unlimited number of poster designs, but only one entry per student and one entry form for each poster. Click here to download the entry form, or go to the spring IAEA Mosaic and IAEA 2014 conference program for a paper copy of the form.
The student whose work is selected to appear on the poster that will be mailed to all schools in Illinois in March 2015 will be recognized at the 2015 IAEA fall conference and at the ISBE spring Board meeting. Students should not include the text and heading for the poster – these components will be added after the poster image is chosen. New University of Illinois Program to Recognize High School Student Innovators

inovators 1Educators know that test scores and grade point averages don’t always tell the whole story. To recognize and celebrate those students whose contributions are innovative, creative, or inspirational, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has launched a new awards program, “Celebrating High School Innovators.”

“The motivation, creativity and tenacity to innovate are essential for our society,” explained Ray Price, co-director of the Illinois Foundry for Innovation in Engineering Education at Illinois.  Price and his team partnered with Paul Ritter, a biology, ecology, and earth science teacher at Pontiac Township High School, to develop a special event to honor high school students across Illinois who have been able to meet current and emerging social needs through innovation in one of five areas: Arts, Media, & Literature; Business Entrepreneurship; Food, Health & Nutrition; Social Entrepreneurship; and Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM).

The new program, which has the endorsement of several Illinois teachers associations, the regional superintendents of schools, and the Governor’s office, reflects the organizers’ belief that test scores and grade point averages do not tell us every important thing about our students.

We love how this ad brings showcase and entertainment together, demonstrating a new smartphone’s imaging capabilities through a magical, microscopic animation. (Fun fact: this ad holds a Guinness World Record as the smallest stop-motion animated film.)

4th Annual “Within Our Reach” Conference

Within our reach coverEvents related to the grand kicked off Thursday, February 27th with visiting artist, Peter London, providing a lecture that was free and open to the public on the campus of Southern Illinois University. Many students, faculty, and community artists participated in this event. The Southern Illinois Art Education Conference Started early Friday morning with four art educators offering lecture/discussion sessions focussing on art education specifically in Southern Illinois. Following this, art educators chose one out of five studio walk workshops to participate. The keynote luncheon featured a lecture from art educator and author, Peter London. After lunch, participants chose a second workshop of the five offered. A tea with Peter London wrapped up the day’s events. We look forward to our next conference “Classroom, Community, Life, ART!” at SIUe on April 17th, 2015!
