Forty pieces of student artwork have been selected for inclusion in the annual art show of the Illinois Art Education Association. This year over 500 entries from grades K-12 were submitted from IAEA members. “The judging process was long and labored due to the tremendous amount of high quality work submitted this year” said show chairperson Venessa Hardy of Lisle Senior High School.
This year’s Student Show Reception was held on Saturday November 12th at the Marriott Hotel in Normal, Illinois as part of the IAEA’s Professional Development Conference. “Congratulations to all the talented young artists that had their art selected for the exhibit, it is quite an honor to be selected for this show. It is exciting to see the talent these young people possess. A big thank you to the artists hard work and to their teachers for their dedication to the field of art education.” said Dorothy Bennett, IAEA president. Students and their families were invited to attend the awards ceremony to acknowledge and honor the winners. Each student was presented a certificate from Dorothy Bennett and also received a prize bag filled with art supplies contributed from Sax Arts/School Specialty, Sargent Arts, Crayola, Ed Hoys International, Ceramic Supply Chicago, Nasco Art Supplies, Mayco, Esther’s Place, and Fimo Clay.

2011-2012 Student Show Artsonia Gallery
There are many reasons why it is important to participate in the IAEA Student Art Show by entering student artwork. A teacher who enters their student’s artwork gives their students opportunities for creative growth. The students whose artwork is submitted by their teachers can feel good about themselves for what they have created. Just having work submitted can give students a boost in confidence: it shows that their teacher believes in them & their artistic ability. It is an extra special honor for students to have their artwork selected for the show. It is accomplishment students can put in their portfolio as they make their college plans. Plus, we know as art educators how important it is to give our students every possibility to have their artwork on display. It gives our students a sense of pride, accomplishment, and understanding of their own artistic abilities.
A teacher that enters student artwork to be judged demonstrates confidence in their art program & her own teaching ability. By having a student recognized she/he gets recognized for their abilities to teach students about the techniques, art history, and processes for creating good quality art. Another reason why it is important to participate in the show is the recognition it gives your own art program. You are showing your peers, your school district, administrators, and community about the way you share your artistic knowledge and techniques with your students and how they take the knowledge you have given them to create solid pieces of art.
For the 2011-12 show, there was a great turn out in the number of teachers who entered in the art show. It would be wonderful to see even more art teachers from across the state participate next year. There is always a good turn out in the number of elementary artwork entries every year. This year high school art entries were up from previous years. On the downside, there were not as many middle school entries. A goal for the 2012 IAEA Student Art Show is to have at least six hundred entries. It would be great to see a larger number of middle school and high school entries for next year. It would be nice to see as many or more entries from the elementary school level too.
Thank you again to the IAEA members for your support and dedication to art education!

About the Student Show
The Student Art Show demonstrates to the public the breadth of experience young people in Illinois are getting in their art programs.
Each year Illinois Art Education Association members are asked to submit images of stellar artwork that was created in their classroom. All art submissions are 2 dimensional projects produced through a variety of techniques – painting, drawing, collage, mixed media, weaving and metal work are just a few examples.
Every year approximately 500 pieces of art from students in grades Kindergarten through high school are sent in to be juried. From that group 40 pieces of outstanding student artwork are chosen. The judges are art teachers representing elementary, middle school & the high school level. The judging process is long & labored due to the tremendous amount of high quality work submitted.
For the IAEA Student Art Show each of the forty pieces are professionally mounted & framed. The show starts out at the IAEA conference in November, where there is an artist reception & awards ceremony. From the conference the show travels to schools, libraries and galleries throughout the state.
It is a great opportunity for students & teachers alike.
