The Slam! will take place Tuesday May 5th, 2015, from 4:30-6:30pm.

Applications are due by midnight on Sunday, March 8, 2015.

The Curriculum Slam! is a forum for educators to showcase fresh, creative ways to bring contemporary art and ideas into the classroom. Meet educators whose work embraces the spirit of inquiry and innovation. Hear how they engage students with the contemporary. Forget the curriculum fair. At the Curriculum Slam, the MCA hands educators the mic!

• Eight presenters are selected by application
• Each presentation: 7 minutes, 14 PowerPoint slides, 30 seconds per slide
• Breakout discussions after the presentations

Who can apply?
Teachers and teaching artists from all grade levels and academic disciplines may apply. Applicants must have prior experience in a classroom setting.

How do I apply?
The application consists of 2 parts:
•    Part I:  Tell us about yourself and the project you are interested in sharing.
•    Part II:  Share (3) images that help tell the story of the project you would like to present.

Why apply?
The MCA Curriculum Slam is probably the most efficient use of a teacher’s PD and networking time. Nowhere else will you gain such deep information on practice of such variety and enjoyment. The format is simply wonderful, and presenting is one of the more fulfilling experiences of my professional development career. I get to share awesome practices from my own classroom and absorb even more awesome opportunities while in the process of having a good time with peers.–Christopher Sykora, 2014 Slam Presenter and Teacher at Deerfield High School

Chicago Teachers Union Arts Committee requests a personal email address of any arts teacher who is looking for a long-term subbing position or possibly a permanent assignment.  We want to encourage the schools to hire subs who are in that field.  We currently have a position at a NW side high school that will need an art sub from March to year-end and most likely become a position next year.

Please send your name/email to John Perryman, Chair of the CTU arts committee [email protected]  or Tina Mangos  [email protected].

Teachers of students in grades 9 – 12 are invited to enter their students’ artwork in the 2015 Illinois Arts Education Week Poster Contest. The postmark deadline to mail entries and forms to ISBE in Springfield is Monday, December 2, 2014.  The theme for the 2015 poster is: Art is Timeless, and the image should relate in some way to the four arts that are included in the Illinois State Standards (visual arts, dance, theatre and music). Teachers may enter an unlimited number of poster designs, but only one entry per student and one entry form for each poster. Click here to download the entry form, or go to the spring IAEA Mosaic and IAEA 2014 conference program for a paper copy of the form.
The student whose work is selected to appear on the poster that will be mailed to all schools in Illinois in March 2015 will be recognized at the 2015 IAEA fall conference and at the ISBE spring Board meeting. Students should not include the text and heading for the poster – these components will be added after the poster image is chosen. Contact Cornelia Powell at: [email protected] with questions or call (217-524-4832).

You can click on the three posters by previous high school artists to view or download.

inovators 1Educators know that test scores and grade point averages don’t always tell the whole story. To recognize and celebrate those students whose contributions are innovative, creative, or inspirational, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has launched a new awards program, “Celebrating High School Innovators.”

“The motivation, creativity and tenacity to innovate are essential for our society,” explained Ray Price, co-director of the Illinois Foundry for Innovation in Engineering Education at Illinois.  Price and his team partnered with Paul Ritter, a biology, ecology, and earth science teacher at Pontiac Township High School, to develop a special event to honor high school students across Illinois who have been able to meet current and emerging social needs through innovation in one of five areas: Arts, Media, & Literature; Business Entrepreneurship; Food, Health & Nutrition; Social Entrepreneurship; and Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM).

The new program, which has the endorsement of several Illinois teachers associations, the regional superintendents of schools, and the Governor’s office, reflects the organizers’ belief that test scores and grade point averages do not tell us every important thing about our students.

freestyle photographic workshopThe IAEA’s Northeast Council partnered with Freestyle Photographic Supply on Wednesday night, September 24th to offer area teachers a free workshop at Niles West High School. Freestyle Photo provided teachers with some truly great information on how to take ordinary photographs and make them extraordinary. Participants were also provided with a free gift for attending. The evening concluded with a presentation by Chris Sykora on “Social Constructivism“. Thanks to all our attendees for making the evening a success!.
The Northeast Council is planning to bring Freestyle back this coming Spring. In this next workshop, teachers will spend the day with two objectives in mind: (1) learning how to properly select the right paper for printing and (2) printing their own personal photos using a variety of specially selected papers and printers. Date and time TBD.

The IAEA’s Northeast East Council in conjunction with Freestyle Photographic is sponsoring a free workshop for art educators. The focus of this event is the importance of printing and all the different media available today. The evening will conclude with a presentation/discussion led by Chris Sykora from Deerfield High School on social awareness projects, facilitating students towards self-guided curriculum that is experience based, and using inquiry as the vehicle for learning.

The workshop will be held at Niles West High School on Wednesday, September 24th from 6-8pm. Niles West HS is located at 5701 W. Oakton St. in Skokie. Space will be available for 24 participants. Registration id now open and can be completed by logging on tohttps://ilaea.org/iaea-council-pages/northeast-council/

*All participants will receive a generous gift courtesy of Freestyle Photographic for their participation.

Social Constructivism Applied to the Digital Classroom.

Presented by Chris Sykora

Participants will take part in a presentation and discussion on themes surrounding social awareness projects, facilitating students towards self-guided curriculum that is experience based, and using inquiry as the vehicle for learning.

Discussion will center around applying practical approaches including examples, as well as, theory to contemporary and conceptual art experiences, touching on Olivia Gude’s work on “why we need new art styles for contemporary thought”. Participants will examine the new art styles are about free and creative self-expression and pushing students to being involved in the world. We will talk about how meaning is constructed and how it operates in physical space, valuing experience as much as making, moving outside of the classroom. Learn to value your role as a teacher, and as an artist collaboratively making real art with your students, not under the guise of a standardized curriculum, but with student ownership and free expression as the fuel.

Sign up now, space is limited!
