Improv increases communication and public speaking skills\, it stimulates fast thinking and engagement with ideas. Improv helps remove mental barriers that block creative thinking and reward spontaneous\, intuitive responses. Participants grow in confidence and feel more connected with others. \n \nImpact on Students: Improv exercises are designed to excite and engage our teachers who\, in turn\, will excite and engage students this fall. Improvisation is a valuable teaching tool. It promotes interdependence and trust among students. Improv exercises actively engage students in the learning process and foster deeper learning. Improv addresses the diverse learning needs of all students.\n\n\n\nJohn Hildreth is an alumnus of the Second City and has been an instructor at the Second City Training Center since 1992. SUMMARY:Webinar: Incorporating Disability Arts in Your Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:Description:\n\nThis talk is focused on helping teachers diversify their curriculum to respond to disability and ableism. While many teachers are diversifying their curriculum through the inclusion of artists of color\, less attention has been focused on the 15% of students with IEPS with identified disabilities\, and understanding their life experiences.  \n\n\nPresenter: Dr. Kelly Gross\n \nDr. Kelly Gross is an Assistant Professor of Art and Design Education at Northern Illinois University. She is currently working on several research projects that focus on the intersection of art education\, special education\, and disability studies. In addition\, Kelly helps run a K-5 STEAM non-profit\, The Rubber Band Project\, which develops project-based learning curricula. The Rubber Band Project provides elementary educational experiences in several school districts in the western suburbs\, professional development workshops\, and led an invited workshop in Australia. Kelly has published on disability issues I art and design education and STEAM Education. During the summer\, Kelly teaches as part of the art education program at Vermont College of Fine Arts. Kelly is a former special education teacher and K-9 art teacher who has taught in New Orleans\, New York City\, and Chicago. She completed the program\, but wanted to continue to further her knowledge. She obtained a Master’s in Art Therapy with an emphasis in Counseling at Mount Mary University. DESCRIPTION:Summer Virtual PD featuring art educator and dynamic presenter\, Libya Doman. Using conversation as “mirrors and windows” to seeing ourselves and others\, Libya Doman designs and delivers curriculums\, workshops\, and keynotes to help educators grapple with topics that are often deemed “taboo.” \nJoin us for a two hour FREE PD on practices that support anti-racist and anti-bias pedagogy. Below the Surface of Art Education will enable participants to reflect upon the barriers that restrict access to learning. Moreover\, specific strategies for analyzing and refining instructional practices are included with this presentation. This session is exclusively for members of our state organizations.\n A two hour professional development certificate will be issued for all attendees. She received a post Baccalaureate from Moore College of Art & Design. She earned her Master’s in Art Education and 2D Art from TC\, Columbia University. Libya Doman is a National Board-certified visual art educator and a cultural responsiveness facilitator. \n \nFor many years\, Ms. Doman has served as an Equity Lead in her school system as well as an adjunct professor at George Mason University. She was a member of NAEA’s Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion (ED&I) Task Force . Libya is an ED&I Guide for NAEA’s School for Art Leaders and Cultural Competency programs. She was named VAEA’s 2020 Art Educator of the Year as well as Elementary Art Educator of the Year. In summer 2022\, Libya was named a Milken Center Fellow. \n\n
