Great News Educators!

On June 16th, 2016 the Illinois Board of Education voted and unanimously approved the updated arts learning standards recommended by the Illinois Arts Learning Standards Initiative. (Fun fact: The arts learning standards have not been updated for almost 20 years!)

The new standards can be implemented immediately; the effective implementation and alignment for districts is 2017-2018.

Next Steps: The Joint Committee on Administrative Rules will review the standards for the approval process. In the meantime, make sure to visit the Illinois Arts Learning Standards Initiative website for reports, documents, and other resources.

Apply now to present at this year’s Curriculum Slam!

Does your curriculum inspire students to engage with the ideas and art of our time? Do you have a project or lesson plan you’d like to share?  Can you tell your story in 7 minutes using PowerPoint?

We are now accepting applications for presenters at the 2015 Curriculum Slam!
The Slam! will take place Tuesday May 5th, 2015, from 4:30-6:30pm.

Applications are due by midnight on Sunday, March 8, 2015.

The Curriculum Slam! is a forum for educators to showcase fresh, creative ways to bring contemporary art and ideas into the classroom. Meet educators whose work embraces the spirit of inquiry and innovation. Hear how they engage students with the contemporary. Forget the curriculum fair. At the Curriculum Slam, the MCA hands educators the mic!

What is the format?
• Eight presenters are selected by application
• Each presentation: 7 minutes, 14 PowerPoint slides, 30 seconds per slide
• Breakout discussions after the presentations

Who can apply?
Teachers and teaching artists from all grade levels and academic disciplines may apply. Applicants must have prior experience in a classroom setting.

How do I apply?
The application consists of 2 parts:
•    Part I:  Tell us about yourself and the project you are interested in sharing.
•    Part II:  Share (3) images that help tell the story of the project you would like to present.

Where can I download the application?

Why apply?
The MCA Curriculum Slam is probably the most efficient use of a teacher’s PD and networking time. Nowhere else will you gain such deep information on practice of such variety and enjoyment. The format is simply wonderful, and presenting is one of the more fulfilling experiences of my professional development career. I get to share awesome practices from my own classroom and absorb even more awesome opportunities while in the process of having a good time with peers.–Christopher Sykora, 2014 Slam Presenter and Teacher at Deerfield High School

Not ready to present? Sign up to attend!
We encourage you to attend to gather ideas, connect with your peers, and fuel your teaching practice. Space is limited, and registration is required.

Chicago Teachers Union Arts Committee requests a personal email address of any arts teacher who is looking for a long-term subbing position or possibly a permanent assignment.  We want to encourage the schools to hire subs who are in that field.  We currently have a position at a NW side high school that will need an art sub from March to year-end and most likely become a position next year.

Please send your name/email to John Perryman, Chair of the CTU arts committee [email protected]  or Tina Mangos  [email protected].

Teachers of students in grades 9 – 12 are invited to enter their students’ artwork in the 2015 Illinois Arts Education Week Poster Contest. The postmark deadline to mail entries and forms to ISBE in Springfield is Monday, December 2, 2014.  The theme for the 2015 poster is: Art is Timeless, and the image should relate in some way to the four arts that are included in the Illinois State Standards (visual arts, dance, theatre and music). Teachers may enter an unlimited number of poster designs, but only one entry per student and one entry form for each poster. Click here to download the entry form, or go to the spring IAEA Mosaic and IAEA 2014 conference program for a paper copy of the form.
The student whose work is selected to appear on the poster that will be mailed to all schools in Illinois in March 2015 will be recognized at the 2015 IAEA fall conference and at the ISBE spring Board meeting. Students should not include the text and heading for the poster – these components will be added after the poster image is chosen. Contact Cornelia Powell at: [email protected] with questions or call (217-524-4832).

You can click on the three posters by previous high school artists to view or download.
